Rub a Dub

Rub a Dub Dub
Three boys in a tub
And who do you think they be?
The pusher, the faker, the bubble beard maker,
Now turn them out, knaves all three!

Finally getting tired of the below ugliness (I'm convinced the builder of this house had an electrical outlet fetish)...

...inspired me to try out the pallet art craze. Let me tell you those suckers are harder to take apart then they look. I worked on two different pallets and broke about four boards (and said a few words with as many letters) before I got any usable ones.

But finally I got four boards (two wide and two narrow - the advantage of using different pallets) long enough to cut down to size on a borrowed chop saw. I screwed on scrap wood to hold them together on the back. I also added a small piece of scrap wood near the top for a hanging ledge (after this picture was taken, though, so don't look for it.)

I printed and cut out letters by hand (my sister came up with the "Rub a Dub Dub" line. I just removed a dub cause I'm lazy to keep it symmetrical) I taped them to the boards and traced around them with pencil.

I used acrylic craft paint and a tiny, precise paintbrush to carefully paint within the lines.

Then I freehanded the "a" in white.

I sanded it "Cuz you like stuff to look old, right Mom?" -- Reed's comment when he watched me roughing up the letters. Yup.

I removed the classy wooden towel bar, popped off the towel ring thing and the reattached the wooden base so I'd have a ledge for my scrap wood piece to rest on. I just had to slide the finished piece onto the towel bar ledge and it's pretty sturdy. Ok, so I thought it would be sturdy, but I failed to take into account three boys who like to chase each other around the house and slam doors. After having to rehang the sign three times, I stapled wire to the back and hung the wire over the wooden base and it's survived every rowdy chase game and a couple of sink fights, so I think we're good...

Voila! And may the toothpaste bubble bearding commence!
